Miami has been called the Manhattan of the south (along with Atlanta) and the reasons are obvious. Since the middle of the Twentieth Century Miami (and Florida) have seen a tremendous growth in population.

perhaps more than any other U.S. city of Miami is truly an international port. Not only is Miami, the Atlantic coast (as well as other U.S. cities like Manhattan, Boston), but Miami has the advantage of being the port of entry not only in the Caribbean but all of South America Europe, Africa and beyond. With this infusion of international connectivity, it is natural that Miami has become the Manhattan of the south.

Miami being a coastal city, like Manhattan and Chicago, has an advantage of being view with this body of water. It is always advantageous to be on the water for it gives you more advantages to work from. Another advantage that Miami has over the older northern cities is it's youth. The skyline of Miami is a new skyline as are the channels and causeways. The look of the city is young and vigorous and this should be kept in mind when painting the city.
This is a city full of art and artists and galleries around the framework of this great city. I noticed that the best way to really look good in Miami also has paintings of boats and ports horizon. Miami has an international reputation for its facilities and marine sports. Most of the great ocean liners are away from home in Miami, so it is wise to keep water issues in mind when making a painting of Miami. Miami has a lot to offer, both artistically and socially, be careful and take the time to familiarize yourself with this great city.
